Bio

Richard Stallman launched the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award, and the the Takeda Award for Social/Economic Betterment, as well as several honorary doctorates.

Nico is the founding member of the Government Open Source Software Resource Center, with a aim to provide information on Free/Open Source Software for stakeholders in (and interested in) all levels of Government. The resource center is not aimed at any specific geographical area, and aim to provide an extensive, global resource.

With official endorsements from various organizations which include The University of the Western Cape Information System Department (South Africa); The Free and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA); Open Source Institute and GOSCON, the resource center access various formal research networks and also informal, open source community networks to collect information on how Governments are using Free and Open Source Software.

Nico is also a Council Member of the Free and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA). FOSSFA has a broad FOSS mission on the African Continent, and aim, amongst other mission objectives, to act as Africa's FOSS voice. (www.fossfa.net)
